Key takeaways

How does F1 qualifying work in 2026? It is three knockout sessions run on Saturday: Q1 lasts 18 minutes and eliminates the slowest six cars, Q2 lasts 15 minutes and eliminates six more, and Q3 lasts 13 minutes with the top ten fighting for pole position. The fastest lap in each session counts, and the eliminated cars take the grid slots behind. For the United States Grand Prix, qualifying starts on Saturday 24 October 2026 at 21:00 UTC.

How does F1 qualifying work: the three sessions

Q1 runs for 18 minutes with all 22 cars. The six slowest are out, and their times set grid positions 17 to 22. Q2 lasts 15 minutes with the 16 survivors, and again six are eliminated, filling positions 11 to 16. Q3 is the pole shootout for the remaining ten, and their best laps set positions 1 to 10.

What changed from 2025

The grid grew to 22 cars with Cadillac's arrival, so Q1 and Q2 each cut six cars instead of five, according to The Race and PlanetF1. PlanetF1 and GPFans also report that the FIA added a minute to Q3 just before the season, taking it from 12 to 13 minutes and shaving a minute off the break before it. One outlet's earlier guide still says 12, which is why we are crediting the later reports.

What counts as a lap, and what does not

A lap only counts if it stays within the rules. A time deleted for exceeding track limits is gone, and the driver is left with the next-best effort, which in a short session may not exist. If two drivers set exactly the same time, the one who set it first ranks ahead. That is why leaving the pit lane in a queue is a tactical decision and not just a nuisance.

There is also a safety net at the back. Drivers normally have to set a Q1 time within 107 percent of the fastest, or the stewards decide whether they can start the race. It rarely bites, but a damaged car can find it in a hurry.

What tyres do you get for qualifying?

In Austin, Pirelli has brought C2 hard, C3 medium and C4 soft, and drivers who reach Q3 get an extra set of softs, per Formula1.com on 21 October 2026. In practice the softs do the qualifying work, and the question is how many of the eight sets a team is willing to spend on Friday. Our tyre allocation piece covers the rest of the Austin choices.

How to read a qualifying result

Look at the gaps, not only the order. A pole by a few thousandths and a pole by three tenths are different stories, even though both show a "1" in the table. Then check who got out of Q1 on the medium and who needed the soft, because that tells you how much pace is hiding in the car. Finally, compare each driver with their team-mate. Qualifying is the cleanest one-lap test in the sport, and the team-mate gap is the closest thing to a fair fight.

Why Q1 is more dangerous than it looks

Cutting six drivers at once makes the first session a bigger risk for the midfield than it used to be. With 22 cars, one scruffy lap, a yellow flag or a lane clogged with slow cars can end a Saturday for a driver who is quick enough to make Q3. The fastest lap is what counts, so traffic matters more than it sounds. That is our read of the format, not an official verdict.

What it means in Austin

The Circuit of the Americas is not a sprint weekend this year, so Saturday's qualifying is the only session that sets the Sunday grid. Friday's practice will show who has the pace. Saturday decides whether it matters. The GridRaces telemetry page will show qualifying gaps once Austin sessions run, the live timing view follows each segment as it happens, and the championship standings show what a front-row start is worth.

Our small prediction: someone with a Q3-quality car will be knocked out in the first 18 minutes, and the pit lane will have a lot of opinions about track position.
